Weekend Guide: Valle de Guadalupe

Valle de Guadalupe might be our favorite weekend trip from San Diego. Less than 2 hours from San Diego is a stunning valley full of rolling hills, wineries, Michelin star restaurants, and stellar spots to stay at. We crossed the border and put together a list of some of our favorites.

Where to Drink

With over 200 wineries in the Valle and more popping up every day, there is plenty to drinking options. Some of our favorites are a blend of great wines from small producers with stunning ambiance. We encourage making reservations for all of the wineries listed below!

Casa Magoni

The Famous Oak Tree of Casa Magoni

With wine making roots reaching back to the 1900’s in northern Italy, this family owned business has been producing wine for over 15 years in the Valle. With an approachable vibe and price it’s one of our favorites for a tasting. Prices range from $280 pesos for a white tasting to $700 pesos for their premium flights. Be sure to sit under the 200+ year old oak tree and soak in the incredible ambiance.

Vinos Paoloni by Montefiori

The view at Vinos Paoloni by Montefiori

Led by director and winemaker, Paolo Paoloni, this estate produces some of the deepest richest wines we have come across. With decades of experience and a unique Italian flair featuring varieties like Nebbiolo and Sangiovese, Paolo coaxes out complex notes in his truly unique wines. With sweeping valley views, stop by for a bottle of my favorite Nebbiolo in the valley and a cheese plate!

Casa de Piedra

The intimate tasting room at Casa de Piedra

One of the most respected wineries and wine makers, led by Hugo D’Acosta, who attended School of Agronomy of Montpellier, France and the Agricultural University of Turin, Italy where he learned from the best before opening Casa de Piedra. With a passion to have Mexico be a well respected wine producing area he makes stunningly complex bubbles and rich deep red wines worth a trip to savor.

Where to Eat

Home to four Michelin One Star Restaurants and dozens of award winning restaurants the food scene in the valley is by far one our favorite reasons to visit. Don’t skip out on the scene around Ensenada down the hill for some stellar views as well! Reservations are highly recommended at almost every spot!

Los Portales de García

The views are epic!

This oceanfront dining gem is technically in Rosarito, but it’s usually a solid stopping point less than a hour from Tijuana on your drive south! This three story restaurant and bar has easily one of the coolest vibes and views around. Stop by for a beer and some bites. It is a little bit touristy but with views like that its hard to miss.

Deckmans En El Mogor

Led by Chef Drew Deckman this masterclass in sustainability is worth a trip for. An ever changing menu featuring hyper local ingredients many of which are sourced from the farm you dine on. Don’t skip the oysters, sourced down the road these plump salty bites are perfect with the pink peppercorn mignonette chef douses them with. An al la carte menu and tasting menu options allow for flexibility as a group and the wine list although small is well represented. We recommend trying chefs personal estate wine for a truly authentic experience.

Fauna

Ranked the #17 best restaurant in Latin America this gem led by Chef David Castro Hussong and pastry chef Maribel Aldaco Silva is one of the most exciting restaurants in the area. Hyper local ingredients with boundary pushing presentations make this spot a must add to the list. Be sure to try their broccoli, oysters, and abalone!
