Using the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System
From routes that reach La Jolla, to the border, the MTS bus and Trolley system is an important part of San Diego’s culture. We love using the MTS System to travel throughout San Diego. It alleviates the need for a car, reduces emissions, and saves you lots of time since we don’t have to sit in traffic! The first step in using the MTS system is downloading their PRONTO app. This will allow you to digitally add money to your PRONTO card. Once you get that done, be sure to familiarize yourself with their routes so you know how to get around. All that you have to do now is scan, hop on, and enjoy the ride!
First Stop: Head to Old Town Trolley Station
This trolley station is a convenient spot to get started on your walking trip. Two Trolley lines pass through here so wherever you are in San Diego, you can almost always get there! MTS also offers free parking at many of their Trolley stations, so you can find a Trolley station near you to park & ride the Trolley to Old Town. After arriving at the station make your way to a San Diego classic - Cafe Coyote - home to some of the best and freshest flour tortillas in town! We recommend carbo loading here to prep for your walk! The flour tortillas are cash only, and are best eaten fresh with either butter or salsa!
Second Stop: Walk to Presido Park
Using our Walking Map head to Presido Park. This 40 acre park is situated on a hill overlooking the bay, downtown, and Mission Valley. It was one of the first settlements in California and was once the capital of Baja California. Take in the amazing views as you learn more about this historical part of San Diego!
Stop Three: Mission Hills Nursery
Using our Walking Map head to Mission Hills Nursery, San Diego’s oldest garden center. It was founded in the early 1900’s by the legendary Kate O. Sessions. This piece of history was purchased by Fausto Palafox and family, and has remained in their family since 1989! This spot has some incredible plants, perfect for a gift!
Stop Four: Lefty’s Chicago Pizzeria
Using our Walking Map head to a Mission Hills icon! Lefty’s Chicago Pizzeria is known for their selection of deep dish pizza’s, perfect for satisfying a hungry foodie who just walked a few miles! We ordered a few slices of each style. One Deep Dish Pepperoni, a classic thinner style Pepperoni to compare, and a slice of veggie for Ashley!
Stop 5: Walk Through Mission Hills Canyon
Using our Walking Map, head through Mission Hills to this cute canyon that snakes it way through the hills. Take a look around and explore the sights and sounds of this urban nature trail. This route is not for those with disabilities or troubles with uneven footing. If you would like to skip this section we highly recommend catching the MTS Route 10 at Washington St & Goldfinch St that runs from Mission Hills to our next stop - India St & Washington St.
Stop 6: Head to Gelato Vero Caffé
Using our Walking Map, walk out of the Mission Hills Canyon along Titus St (or take MTS Route 10 to the India Street Stop) before reaching the famed Gelato Vero Caffé. Founded in 1984, this locals spot has been cranking out incredible gelato, espresso, and small pastries for years. Prefect for the celebratory foodie dessert after a long walk! We enjoyed a scoop of strawberry and cookies and cream, and made it the perfect ending to our trip!
Stop 7: Catch the Trolley Back!
Congratulations! You successfully took a walking trip through San Diego’s historical Mission Hills / Old Town Neighborhood! All you have to do now is walk down to the Washington Street Transit Station, Scan your PRONTO app and hop on back the MTS Trolley!
