San Diego’s Most Famous Gelato Shop Opens in Ocean Beach

Written by Chris Stone

“We wanted to do something that was special for the OB community, as well as something that felt like it had been here for along time” said Kris Warren, one of the owners of Ans Gelato. Giving homage to the previous tenant as they have done for each of their now four locations across San Diego, this former electronic repair / cell phone shop has finally been repurposed into the latest gelato shop from Ans Gelato and we couldn’t be more impressed about what they created.

From salvaging retro electronics to hunting through garage sales and thrift shops they outfitted the store to be a blast from the past. Stuffed to the brim with CD makers, VHS tapes, old cameras, oscilliscopes, TV’s and all of the now defunct technology from the last 100 years its a unique theme that works so well for the always funky OB community.

Some of the funky electronics from the past!

The gelato at Ans Gelato remains as delightful as ever. Their team meticulously crafts their gelato using only the finest, ultra-premium ingredients, and almost all the mix-ins are in-house made. So, if you spot blueberry jam, cookies, or pie crust in one of their flavors, you can be certain that they’ve hand-added them to the gelato.

“Motherboard”

We recommend sampling a few of their new exclusive OB flavors such as

Motherboard – A collaboration with @ob_noodlehouse and inspired by their peanut butter whiskey (Skrewball), this double dark chocolate (70%) gelato has ribbons of a peanut butter swirl consisting of organic peanut butter, condensed milk, honey, vanilla, and a pinch of salt.

No Signal – Inspired by sticky toffee pudding popular in the United Kingdom, this gelato combines a homemade butterscotch from brown sugar, butter, vanilla, and cream with a date sponge cake made with Medjool dates, molasses, vanilla, and chopped pecans all mixed into a vanilla and molasses gelato base.

PCB Gold Finger – Inspired by the traditional golden milk drink popular for its health benefits, the team starts with a water infusion including ground turmeric, fresh ginger, cinnamon sticks, crushed cardamom, and ground nutmeg before combining with barista oat milk and freezing into a golden vegan gelato.

Riquimbili – in collaboration with Ocean Beach dessert staple, @iloveazucar this gelato starts by making a fresh a pistachio butter, then blending into gelato before finally adding in additional crushed pistachios for texture and Azucar’s famous passion fruit and raspberry caramel. Each batch contains nearly 3 pounds of pistachios.

Walkman – inspired by the strawberry matcha latte at one of An’s favorite cafés, @rikkafikacafe this gelato uses house-milled ceremonial matcha from @parutea – a specialty loose leaf tea and matcha company based in San Diego – and combines it with a homemade strawberry jam.

Bluetooth – this dairy free coconut gelato infuses 2 pounds of coconut with blue spirulina. Ask for bee pollen to add some crunch and a health boost. It's vegan without the bee pollen.

Power Supply – Overnight milk-brew coffee sourced from @ob.beans Then fresh-brew coffee in water and combine the two different brews with a little vanilla. Finished by mixing in cocoa nibs.
