Beach BBQ with Grass Run Farms Beef
Written by Ashley Dunn
It’s summer! Which means it’s time to hit the beach. We personally love putting together a fun in the sun, beach BBQ. There’s a ton of awesome spots, but one of our go-to’s happens to be Mission Bay — and we usually stop by Gelson's on the way, to pick up everything we need. Gelson’s has an amazing selection, plus they just teamed up with Grass Run Farms, to launch a grass-fed beef line, perfect for grilling on the beach!
Where we go: Mission Bay Park
A beach BBQ can be a lot of work, but the views and the company are so worth it! There’s tons of options through out San Diego, and even some good fire pits we’d recommend. However, if we’re bringing the grill, we like to head over to Mission Bay, as there are some wide-open park areas that border the water. Perfect for a full grill set up. Pro Tip: We also went out later in the day, so we even found a spot to park our car and unload. Honestly, the convenience and view is what makes Mission Bay our favorite spot —what’s not to love!
Where we shop: Gelson's
Before heading over to Mission Bay, we stopped by Gelson's to stock up on all our ingredients & meat! Gelson's is known for their high end products — from Natural, to Organic, to Conventional, they’ll have everything you might be looking for. We personally love walking through Gelson’s to see what new products they have on shelves. Throughout San Diego they have locations in Pacific Beach, Del Mar, and Carlsbad. We visited the Del Mar Location where Scott, the manager, and Armando, their butcher, were incredibly helpful as we walked through the store to find all our ingredients!
What We Got
We were very excited to learn of Gelson's new 100% grass fed beef, in partnership with Grass Run Farms. This meat is Hormone-Free, Antibiotic Free, 100% Vegetarian Fed Born, Pasture Raised and Harvested in the USA. It was so interesting to learn about Grass Run Farms, which are actually made up of family farmers throughout the Midwest. These farms encourage traditional farming, focusing on the natural cycle of the land and weather. You could say these cows seem rather happy — never fed any antibiotics and free to roam the grasslands.
Armando, Gelson’s butcher, presented us with three different grass-fed cuts: skirt steak, ribeye, and New York. All looked phenomenal — and were perfect for our tentative menu!
Gelson's also has a great produce section, complete with all the goodies we needed. We also decided to pick up a bottle of wine, both for ingredient purposes and something to drink at home (not on the beach, of course). They had a great selection of wine and even their own reserve bottle, which was actually delicious!
What We Made
Now that we had all the ingredients, we packed up the ice chest and headed over to Mission Beach with the family! We came fully prepared with everything we might need: chairs, a table, the grill, cutting boards, utensils… and of course Mission Bay made sure to bring the beautiful sunset! Another reason we personally love Mission Bay is because we can set up the BBQ without any hassle. Be sure to check all the beach rules before choosing your spot, of course. Some don’t allow BBQ’s!
So, after everyone arrived and everything was set up, we got to cooking. It was so nice to cook and prep while enjoying the sail boats pass by. I will note, not everyone has to go all out, but we definitely wanted to do these beautiful cuts of meats justice, so we paired them with some delicious sides. See our menu and some side dish recipes.
Grass Run Farms Skirt Steak - Tacos with Grilled Veggies
We love grilling veggies, carrots and grilled onions are a must add to tacos! These grilled crunchy veggies paired beautifully with the thin strips of Grass Run Farms Skirt Steak. Skirt Steak is ideal for tacos as it’s very thin and allows for a quick cook.
Grass Run Farms New York Strip - with Red Wine Shallot Butter
Red Wine Shallot Butter Recipe: Grill 2 Shallots cut in half, until lightly charred and soft. Finely chop. Combine 1 Stick of soft Grass Fed Salted Butter, shallots, 2 Tablespoons of Cabernet Sauvignon (we used Gelson's Private Reserve), and a pinch of black pepper. This roasted shallot and red wine butter makes a great addition to a NY Strip. We loved the natural flavors of the Grass Run Farms beef dipped in this butter! So yummy!
Grass Run Farms Ribeye - with a Jalapeño “Salsa”
Grilled Jalapeno “Salsa”: Not a traditional salsa in any way, this light “salsa” is perfect addition to any steak! Grill 2 Whole Jalapeños until charred, wrap in foil to allow the skin to flake off, it may take some cleaning by hand. Grill 1 white onion split in half until charred, wrap in foil to soften. Combine with 1/2 cup chopped cilantro, 1/2 cup chopped parsley and the juice of one lime. Combine and season with S&P to taste. We loved this cut with this salsa, it made a delicious addition to the steak and the fattiness of the Grass Run Farms Ribeye was cut well with the acidity of the salsa.
